Moo Deng was born July 10, 2024 at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi, Thailand. She is a pygmy hippo, a species native to West Africa and endangered in the wild, with fewer than 2,500 left. Her name, "Moo Deng," won a public naming poll run by the zoo and translates as "bouncy pork."

She went viral in mid-September 2024 after the zoo's social media account started posting clips of her charging at keepers, biting ankles, and sliding around on wet concrete. Within two weeks the videos had racked up hundreds of millions of views. Sephora-style merch, a Saturday Night Live sketch, and a CoinGecko trending spike all followed.
