TL;DR Summary
- Launched February 2024 on Base as the unofficial mascot token of Coinbase's Layer 2 network
- Named after Brett, the blue-haired character from Matt Furie's Boy's Club comic. Pepe, Landwolf, and Andy are the other three members of the quartet
- Matt Furie has not endorsed the token. It is a community project using the character, the same dynamic PEPE has with Furie
- Fixed supply of roughly 10 billion. No team allocation claimed; LP was burned at launch
- Became the largest memecoin on Base by market cap in mid-2024, peaking around $2 billion FDV
- Primary liquidity on Aerodrome and Uniswap on Base. Listed on Coinbase, Binance (via futures), OKX, and Bybit
- Transaction costs on Base are typically under a cent, which makes BRETT usable for small trades in a way Ethereum-mainnet memecoins are not
What is Brett?
Brett (BRETT) Tokenomics
The History of Brett
BRETT launched on Base in February 2024, roughly six months after Coinbase officially opened Base to mainnet traffic. The timing mattered. Base needed a native memecoin to anchor its culture the same way Solana had BONK and Ethereum had PEPE, and BRETT arrived in the slot.
Early adoption came through Crypto Twitter and Warpcast (the Farcaster client, which has heavy Base overlap). Aerodrome became the primary DEX for BRETT liquidity, and the token quickly became the dominant pair on Base DEXs by volume. Market cap climbed through spring and summer 2024, peaking at roughly $2 billion FDV during the broader 2024 memecoin run.
Coinbase listed BRETT on its spot exchange in late 2024, which was the single clearest signal that the token had made it past the speculative-memecoin phase into something the retail-accessible. Binance added perpetual futures shortly after. Since the 2024 peak, BRETT has retraced with the rest of the memecoin market but has held its position as the largest Base-native memecoin by a comfortable margin.
Brett Community & Culture
The BRETT community lives on Warpcast and Crypto Twitter. Warpcast matters because Farcaster is disproportionately a Base-native social network, and BRETT holders overlap heavily with the Farcaster power-user crowd. That is a different community shape than most memecoins: more technical, more aligned with builder culture, less tolerant of pure rug-chasing.
Shared bits include "based Brett" riffs, the blue-haired reaction images, and a tone that leans chill rather than maximalist. There is less "army" language than in Shiba Inu or Floki communities, less "to the moon" than in Dogecoin. The running joke is that BRETT is the coin for people who would rather be building on Base than shouting about price. That is aspirational. In practice, the chart-watchers are still there; they just post quieter.
Because Base overlaps so heavily with Coinbase's mainstream user funnel, the BRETT community also skews toward crypto-curious retail that is not yet deep into DeFi. That makes it unusual among Furie-character memes: less 4chan, more onboarding.

How to Buy BRETT
Easiest route for US retail is Coinbase directly: BRETT is listed on the Coinbase spot exchange, which means fiat-to-BRETT in one step without touching a DEX. For better pricing or larger size, the DEX route on Base works well. Bridge ETH to Base using the official Base bridge (bridge.base.org) or withdraw ETH directly from Coinbase to Base, which avoids the bridge entirely. Then swap on Aerodrome or Uniswap. Gas is typically under a cent per swap. Contract verification: several copycat tokens have used the BRETT name on Base and other chains. Pull the contract from the official project X account or a reliable tracker (CoinGecko, DexScreener), and paste it directly into your swap interface rather than searching by ticker.

How to Store BRETT
BRETT is a standard ERC-20 on Base. Any EVM wallet that supports Base works: Coinbase Wallet, MetaMask, Rainbow. For size, pair with a Ledger and sign through MetaMask. Base is a stable L2 with strong wallet tooling, so transaction simulation before signing catches most phishing attempts. Always add the Base network manually if your wallet does not include it by default, and verify the BRETT contract before importing.
Risks & Considerations
- No official Matt Furie endorsement and no Coinbase affiliation. The "Coinbase-backed" framing in some marketing is not accurate
- Base dependency. Outages, bridge issues, or a strategic shift by Coinbase around Base directly affect BRETT
- Competition on Base is growing. TOSHI, DEGEN, and newer Base memes rotate attention
- Typical memecoin volatility. 70 to 80% drawdowns have already happened and will again
- Regulatory overhang on memecoins broadly, with additional scrutiny possible on anything perceived as Coinbase-adjacent
- Character IP sits with Matt Furie. He has previously taken legal action against unauthorized uses of his work, though not against PEPE or BRETT tokens to date

Future of Brett
BRETT's bull case is that it is now permanently embedded as the Base memecoin the same way BONK is Solana's and PEPE is Ethereum's. Coinbase listing, Binance futures, deep Aerodrome liquidity, and a Warpcast-native community are all hard to replicate. If Base keeps gaining market share among Ethereum L2s, BRETT is one of the cleanest retail vehicles for that exposure.
The bear case is that memecoins rotate. DEGEN, TOSHI, and the next Base meme are already eating some of the attention share, and BRETT does not have product revenue or token utility to fall back on when sentiment turns. The Coinbase affiliation is vibes, not contract. The Furie connection is character usage, not endorsement. Without a durable edge beyond brand, BRETT reverts to trading like a memecoin — which it is.
The more interesting question: does Base eventually ship a token, or does Coinbase more directly integrate one of the ecosystem tokens? If that happens and it is not BRETT, the narrative moat narrows. For now, BRETT is the default Base meme. Defaults are sticky, but not permanent.
