The Cheems meme starts with Balltze, a Shiba Inu who lived in Hong Kong with his owner. A 2017 photograph of Balltze looking skeptical and round-faced went viral online. Over the next several years, the image mutated into two major meme formats: the "m"-inserted speech bit ("cheemsburger") and the "Swole Doge vs. Cheems" format, where a hyper-muscular Shiba Inu argues with a soft, anxious one. Cheems was always the underdog. That is the character's whole role.

Balltze died on August 18, 2023 after a battle with cancer. The news was covered in tech and meme press, and tributes flooded every platform where the meme had lived.
