Market capitalization, or market cap, represents the total value of a cryptocurrency calculated by multiplying the circulating supply of tokens by the current price per token. This metric provides a standardized way to compare the relative size and value of different cryptocurrencies regardless of their token price or supply structure. A token priced at $0.001 with 100 billion circulating supply has the same $100 million market cap as a token priced at $100 with 1 million circulating supply. Understanding this relationship is crucial for evaluating whether a memecoin is undervalued, fairly valued, or overpriced.

Market cap is essential for setting realistic price expectations. A common misconception among new memecoin investors is focusing solely on token price - hoping a $0.001 token will reach $100. However, this would require a market cap potentially exceeding the entire cryptocurrency market. Experienced traders evaluate potential returns by comparing current market cap to realistic target market caps based on comparable projects. If a memecoin has a $10 million market cap and achieves the success of a similar project with $500 million market cap, investors could see 50x returns regardless of the actual token price.

When analyzing memecoins, distinguish between circulating supply (tokens currently available for trading) and total supply (all tokens that will ever exist). Fully diluted valuation (FDV) uses total supply rather than circulating supply, providing a more complete picture when significant tokens are locked or unvested. Low market cap memecoins offer higher potential returns but carry proportionally higher risks, as smaller projects are more susceptible to manipulation, liquidity issues, and failure.
